Moving to Minnesota Prons and Cons

Here are a few pros and cons to consider as you make your move to The North Star State:

Pros.
  • The state offers a job market that stays relatively strong. There are several metropolitan areas in Minnesota where work is easy to find, but there are numerous career opportunities here as well.
  • There are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy. The Land of 10,000 Lakes offers numerous opportunities to get outside to start exploring.
  • Minnesota provides an interesting culinary experience. Even the Smithsonian takes note of the dining opportunities that are available in the Twin Cities and the rest of the state.
  • The educational infrastructure in Minnesota is excellent. There are over 200 colleges and universities currently operating in the state of Minnesota.
Cons.
  • Mosquitoes are everywhere during the summer. Although the summers are generally cool because of its location in the upper Midwest, the temps get warm enough to encourage the insects to come out to play.
  • The tax rates in Minnesota are much higher than most other states in the region. One of the reasons why Minnesota hasn’t had the same budget shortfalls as other states in the Midwest is because of their shockingly high tax rates.
  • Traffic can be a significant problem in the Twin Cities and the southern corridor. If you live in the northern part of the state, then traffic is a non-issue for you. If you live or visit the Twin Cities, then the commute is better than what you’d experience in NYC or Los Angeles, but it is far from being free of congestion.
Tax Rates
  • Property Tax: 1.11%. Minnesota’s effective real-estate tax rate ranks #19 in the country.
  • Sales Tax: 6.875% (base state sales tax). The total sales tax rates by municipality range is 8.375%.
  • Income Tax: Graduated. There are four brackets: 5.35%, 7.05%, 7.85%, and %9.85
Housing Market

The typical home value of homes in Minnesota is $297,253. This value is seasonally adjusted and only includes the middle price tier of homes. Minnesota home values have gone up 10.3% over the past year.

What Should I Know In 2021?

Economy Outlook

The strongest gains were in industries that suffered the largest losses last month.

This is encouraging in one sense as the hardest-hit industries seem to be on the rebound. But the sheer size of job losses in those industries means that many more months of such gains are needed to make up the losses. Additionally, gains in sectors like accommodation and food service and retail mask losses in some other sectors of particular importance to Minnesota’s economy like manufacturing, wholesale trade, management of companies (i.e. headquarters), and local government.

Minnesota’s rank is based on strong labor supply and quality of life. The Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area is home to 65% of the state’s population. It also serves as the state’s economic hub, with companies such as Target, U.S. Bancorp, General Mills, 3M, and Medtronic headquartered there. Minnesota has the highest percentage of adults with a high school degree at 93% (it ranks ninth for college attainment). With its good schools, healthy populous, and abundance of recreation and leisure options.

The unemployment rate fell to 4.1% in Minnesota in April, from 4.2% in March, on a seasonally adjusted basis. The number of unemployed dropped by 3,072, to 122,934, and the number of employed increased by 3,147 to 2,899,594. The labor force grew by 75 to 3,022,528.
